What Hair Removal Laser Is Right For Me? December 31st, 2009

First of all, what is a laser?

A laser is a device that produces light of a single color or wavelength. In dermatology, these lasers produce pulses of high-energy light that is taken up by the desired target. In the case of hair removal, the target is the melanin pigment contained within the hair shaft. The tricky part of laser hair removal is targeting the hair shaft without damaging the melanin pigment in the surface of the skin. Thus the laser light has to be on long enough to heat the hair, but not too long to allow that heat to spread to the surrounding skin causing damage.

What laser is right for me?

The right laser for an individual patient depends upon the thickness of the hair and the patients skin type. Some lasers are faster than others, so for treating very large surface areas one may choose a laser that is able to treat large areas in a reasonable period of time.

In addition, if the hair on an individual patient becomes thinner and less dense following laser treatments, I often switch lasers to accommodate the change in the hair type and texture. There are a number of parameters that can be selected on a given laser. While each laser gives a unique color, or wavelength of light, other settings such as the energy, and how long the light stays on (the pulse duration) can be selected by the user. Because there are a number of settings which can be chosen during a treatment session, it is very important to have an experienced laser operater who understands how lasers work and the risks and benefits of various settings.

Is laser different for people with darker or tanned skin?

In my opinion, very dark skinned patients often do better with the Nd:YAG laser, while lighter skinned patients may respond better to the diode or alexandrite lasers.

Lasering people with dark skin is much more tricky than lasering people with light skin. However, the hair must be dark in order to be seen by the laser. Lasers are absorbed by the pigmentation in the hair shaft which produces heat that then results in inflammation which sends a signal to the hair to go into a long-term resting period. The ideal laser patient that would be easiest to treat and respond best would be someone with very light skin and dark hair. However, people have all different degrees of skin and hair pigmentation. The trick with laser hair removal is to avoid injuring the surface of the skin where the melanin pigment lives, while effecting the pigmentation in the hair shaft. The problem is, your skin and hair dont know whether they are supposed to absorb the laser light or not. Therefore, any dark pigmentation will absorb most forms of laser light. Certain lasers are somewhat less noticed by epidermal melanin pigment. The laser that is most commonly used on very dark skin would be the Nd:YAG laser. This laser has the longest wavelength of any of the hair removal lasers, and thus is less absorbed by melanin pigmentation over-all. Because is it less absorbed by the melanin pigment in the surface of the skin, it runs less of a risk of injuring the surface of the skin.

Its important that before any cosmetic procedure you contact your personal physician to discuss whether a particular treatment may be right for you. Make sure you consult your physician first prior to treatment.br

Tattoo Fade Creams Dont be a Sucker December 31st, 2009

Author: Johnathan Scottbr
Source: isnare.combr
br
I’ve written several posts about the deceptive nature of Tattoo Cream Removers and the way they advertise their products and then don’t back up their claims with a decent guarantee or in some cases no guarantee at all.

The premise behind tattoo fade creams is they are supposed to fade a tattoo simply by rubbing a cream over the tattooed area once or twice a day and after a few months your tattoo will be nothing but a memory. Well, I call BS on that claim and today I have more evidence that those claims are indeed false.

First we need to cover a bit of old ground to remind our readers how a tattoo fade cream works. Simply put, a tattoo fade cream whether it contain Hydroquinone, Alpha Arbutin, Kojic Acid or any other skin pigment inhibitor, limits or stops the production of skin pigment. When rubbed on the skin above a tattoo it fades the skin in the first layer of skin known as the epidermis and cannot penetrate any deeper. To the unenlightened, all tattoos are located in the second layer of skin known as the dermis. So while you may think your tattoo is fading it is just the skin pigment directly above the tattoo that is fading – not the tattoo pigment itself.

Well, now we have a skin fade product manufacturer in England who has admitted to that very fact. Skinlight, a British manufacturer of a skin fade cream called Meladerm (no relation to Nuviderm) states as a matter of fact on their website that skin fade creams do not and cannot penetrate beyond the first layer of skin into the second layer of skin where the tattoo pigment is located. They’ve blown the cover of the American companies claiming otherwise and Skinlight is made of the same basic ingredients as the newest and most advanced tattoo removal creams sold in the United States.

Here is the telling paragraph :

Does Meladerm® work on all kinds of hyperpigmentation?

“Hyperpigmentation can occur on many different layers of the skin. Though typically epidermal, hyperpigmentation can occasionally be dermal. Dermal pigmentation occurs underneath the skin where as epidermal is actually on the skin. In the case of dermal pigmentation, topical creams can not penetrate below the epidermis to alleviate the problem. Normally, the melanocytes are located in the basal layer of the epidermis and an increase in number or activity will cause epidermal hyperpigmentation. However, formed melanin may be transferred to the dermis or, in some cases, dermal melanocytes are present.”

So, there it is. Tattoo pigment is considered dermal pigmentation and unreachable by any known tattoo fade cream. For those of you considering buying a tattoo removal fade cream you need to understand that you are about to be taken for a ride that ends with a thinner wallet and a fully intact tattoo.

Products such as Wreckingbalm, which includes a small battery operated sander to be used in conjunction with their cream and Tatmed, which advises their customers to buy an exfoliation pad to aid in the tattoo removal. These two products rely on exfoliation as the method of tattoo removal, not the creams, but it’s the monthly purchase of the creams by their customers that make them money.

Maybe one day soon there will be a cream that removes tattoo pigment, but that product does not currently exist.

Laser, ipl, Rejuvi and do it yourself tattoo removal products like Nuviderm are the only medically proven methods of tattoo removal on the market today. Just be sure to follow the easy to use instructions for the do it yourself products, they were written for a reason.br

Enjoy Your Type of Beauty – It is Special and Unique! December 31st, 2009

br
In Africa, in many tribes, light-skinned women are especially admired. In some tribes, a higher bride-price was paid for a light-skinned woman. This has led many women to bleach their dark skin, sometimes using very dangerous chemicals.

However, light skin shows signs of ageing faster than dark skin. It looks very good when one is young, but looks less attractive as the face loses volume, or as the face develops lines and wrinkles over time. In contrast, dark skin ages very well, hardly showing signs of aging. Well-nourished with moisturisers, it can look very good for very long.

Besides, light skin is prone to pigmentation irregularities, especially as it ages, such as different kinds of warts, livers spots and so on. Such pigmentation irregularities do not show up on dark skin. Moreover, excellent make-up has now been developed for dark skin, such that looking good with dark skin is now just as easy as with light skin. For example, dark skin can wear gold and silver like no other skin colour.

Not to mention that dark skin has very good protective qualities against dangerous suns rays. So stop wishing away your dark skin or bleaching it – enjoy its advantages!

Some women are tall and elegant, with what is called models height. Good for them. But petite women who are below models height can wear certain tailored pieces better than models. Certain tailored suits and some versions of the original little black dress look best on the proportional petite woman, and not on the elongated model.

Additionally, the petite women bring out the protective instinct in all the males in the vicinity, in a way that a model cannot.

Fashion designers prefer bone-thin women to wear their clothes. In real life however, I have never seen a pleasantly curvy woman who is single unless she wants it that way. A lot of men are just not convinced about the model as the beauty ideal, and without admitting it aloud, are still attracted to the more endowed woman. Like I already said, I do not have any pleasantly plump friends who are not the object of somebodys desire.

Hair has never been the defining attribute for beauty in Africa, simply because a lot of women have rather less of it than they would like. But in the modern society, long hair is starting to play a big role. African woman with short hair or hair that grows slowly may feel disadvantaged.

Happily, there are now so many styling options for women with short hair. And I do not mean just hair extensions or weaves. There are all sorts of new, hip styles that only look good on short hair.

From the Caucasian point of view, everyone claims that blondes have more fun, or that gentlemen prefer blondes. Good for them. But Americas Sweetheart, and the woman commanding the most money per film at the moment are both dark-haired. It just goes to show you: your particular type of beauty – whether dark or light-skinned, dark or light-haired, tall or petite, slim or curvy – is special and unique, and appeals to someone somewhere.

My own personal experience? My skin could be called light, especially when I am in Europe. I loved it when I was younger. Now, however, I notice that the spots and pigments that have accumulated on it are there to stay. When I am in Africa, my skin gets darker, and looks more even. I actually prefer the darker version.

I was raised in an African country where light skin was the better skin. But I will never forget the first time I saw a dark Rwandese woman. I stood stock still in the middle of the street: I was overwhelmed by so much perfection – the height, the walk, the features – all covered in a perfect, very dark skin. I felt the same when I saw women from southern Sudan – so dark, but so beautiful!

I have two tall, dark and handsome brothers who have no time of day for models. They prefer tiny, petite, helpless women. The moral? Whatever your type of beauty, enjoy it. It IS special and unique, and someone somewhere loves it.

Five Most Common Side Effects Of Laser Hair Removal December 31st, 2009

Author: Gen Wrightbr
Source: articlesbase.combr
br
Unwanted hair can be a bane to your existence, especially facial hair on women. Men are not typically given to this procedure, even though that does occur. Just watch a few buds sprout up on a clearly visible mole, and it can be easier no matter what your gender to take care of business without thinking twice. Laser hair removal is one of the best procedures to meet this need. It is more often than not a permanent solution to those of you who suffer from such annoying and sometimes embarrassing predicaments. But before you say, Sign me up, you should know that, like all medical procedures, this is not one without side effects. Here are the five most common that you are likely to encounter with laser hair removal. 1. Long term damage to skin: The question that is always the elephant in the room for laser hair removal or any medical or cosmetic procedure: What are the long term risks? There are not many, but the one that there is may likely give you pause. It is possible that your laser hair removal procedure could cause permanent or long term damage to skin around the area of operation. This, along with scarring and discoloration are possible effects because the laser must do its work while also dealing with the delicacy of the epidermis and pigmentation. 2. Hyper-pigmentation: This and the remainder of these side effects for laser hair removal are relatively mild. With hyper-pigmentation, there is always a risk of darkening around the treated area when the procedure is first performed. It is an issue that usually works itself out in time. As long as the treatment was not done on the most visible area of your body, or during the summertime, you wont have to give it another thought. 3. Inflammation: Skin around the treated area can occasionally become inflamed and turn red. This can be painful, but as is the case with all inflammations, it is usually something that goes away barring infection. Should an infection occur, dont suffer with it. Seek help immediately!4. Swelling: Few things cause more discomfort than swelling, especially where the hair follicles are concerned. Like inflammation and hyper-pigmentation, it is usually a problem that goes away in a short amount of time, but that time can be very agonizing depending on the size of the infected area. You may wish to seek medication for excessive pain.5. Pain: If you dont do well with discomfort during the procedure, then you may ask your provider for a local anesthetic. Some pain is common without it, but it is usually nothing unbearable. If you want to save on your procedure, skip it; however, dont take on more you can bear. Know thy self, says an old piece of wisdom. Trust that instinct, one way or the other, and you wont be sorry. In the United States, a great deal of importance is placed on appearance. Laser hair removal for Kentucky residents and the world at large is definitely an option you should consider. Just make sure that before you do, you are aware of the risks, and you trust a reputable provider to handle your procedure. br

Sunless Tanning December 31st, 2009

Author: Richard Heaneybr
Source: articleage.combr
br
Sunless tanning is becoming very popular, there are two main reasons for this. Firstly having a good tan has become fashionable and desirable. A lot of people do not live in a place with constant sunshine and most of us cannot afford a holiday to the sun to top up our tans every month. This means that people are turning to the various methods of sunless tanning to achieve the desired result. The second reason is to do with health. It is common knowledge that regular exposure to the sun increases the risk of contracting skin cancer. Also the sun has an aging effect on skin, regular sun bathing can leave you looking older than you actually are. Sunless tanning can offer a safe way to get that bronzed look you were after without damaging your skin.
There are 4 main sunless tanning methods you can use:
1.Sunless Tanning Lotion – Sunless tanning lotions generally contain the bronzing ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This is a colourless sugar that interacts with dead skin cells causing a colour change to occur. The colour change usually lasts about 5 to 7 days from the initial application. This is a popular method of sunless tanning but it can be difficult to get an even tan.
2.Spray Tanning – The science of spray tanning is similar to tanning lotions, but the tanning solution is applied in a spray. This can either be done manually by a spray gun or automatically in a tanning booth. A new development in spray tanning is the colourless tanning solution. This solution does not contain bronzer and affords a less streaky, more even tan.
3.Tanning Beds – Tanning beds or sunbeds contain fluorescent tubes, these tubes tan the skin by emitting Ultraviolet (UV) Rays, the same type of radiation that is found in natural sunlight. These tanning beds are an effective sunless tanning method but frequent, long term usage can lead to skin cancer and skin aging.
4.Tanning Pills – Tanning pills come in three varieties: Those that contain caretenoid pigments, those that contain tyrosine and those with no active ingredients. Caretenoid pills contain a pigment which, when taken internally saturates the fat layers just below the skin, which appears to give the skin colour. These pills can change the colour of your skin but the results are often undesirable. The colouration can look unnatural and tends to be concentrated in fatty areas leaving an uneven effect. The other 2 types of tanning pill are not proven to have any effect on the colour of your skin.
Generally the best method of sunless tanning is the spray tan, or if you can not get to a tanning salon you can use a tanning lotion. There are a wide variety of sunless tanning products available so some experimentation may be necessary to find one which you are comfortable using and which works with your skin type. Tanning beds are effective but they have similar risks to conventional sunbathing. Tanning pills are best avoided unless you know exactly what they contain and what the effect will be on your skin.

Acne scars are represented by two types of scarring: pitted or depressed and pigmented. The type of scars depends on the severity of acne breakouts and how well you have handled the situation. Often, people that have moderate acne pick and squeeze on pimples which can lead to pitted scars that have an ice-pick appearance or hyperpigmented scarring.Even though these types of disfigurements are very difficult to treat, there are options available, however, the solutions need to be applied with discipline. Usually treatments for acne scars and hyperpigmentation need to be applied twice a day everyday for quite a long period of time. The results depend on how well you keep up the discipline, how well your skin adapts to the treatment, how deep and old your scars are and of course the treatment cream. Noticeable results are usually achieved after using a product for 8-12 weeks depending on the severity of your scars. When you have pitted acne defects, the time for the results to show might take a bit longer and in some cases you need to use other procedures to compliment the treatment. Microdermabrasion, cosmetic filler, fat injections, deep chemical peels and laser resurfacing are some of the treatment options available for severe pitted imperfections. The Natural Acne Solution for Pitted ScarringLike the majority of sufferers, you might want to opt for natural skin lotions and remedies to get rid of your scars, since other treatments arent compatible with your skin type and may cause several side effects that you want to avoid. Getting Rid of Tattoos – Remove Or Fade? December 30th, 2009

Author: Jared D. Ingrambr

br
Tattoo removing is not as easy as getting those pigments into your skin. Any dermatologic surgeon will definitely agree that there is no sure-fire way to completely get rid of a tattoo.

In the process of getting a tattoo, pigments are inserted into the skins dermal layer. The ink is injected into the skin so when you are seeing a tattoo, you are seeing it through the first layer of the skin which is the epidermis. This is the reason why tattoos stay in place for a long time, if not for a lifetime. This is also the reason why removing a tattoo can be a complex process with no guarantees.

There are a lot of ways made available by science and technology to remove tattoos. Fading a tattoo may be the more appropriate method because tattoos are meant to be permanent. The skill of the tattoo artist plays an important role in the ease of removing, or more appropriately, covering up the mark. A good and experienced tattoo artist is capable of injecting the ink into one skin level without varying depths and these types of tattoos are a lot easier to remove.

Importantly, not all tattoos can be erased completely. The good thing is that there are a lot of other tattoo removing methods that could work for you. However, the effect of the methods will vary and depend on a lot of things like the size of the tattoo, the healing rate of the individual, and on how long the tattoo has been in place.

The Controversy Behind Sunless Tanning Pills December 30th, 2009

Author: Ken Marlboroughbr
Source: articleage.combr
br
For convenience and ease of use, people may be tempted to turn to the sunless tanning pill for an effortless tan. Tanning pills are controversial and thought to be unsafe. The FDA, in fact, has not approved most tanning pills, and they can be difficult to get in the U.S. Besides some severe side effects, the sunless tanning pill may not even work at all, depending on the brand used.
The ingredients of a sunless tanning pill will vary, and in many instances, there is no clear ingredient breakdown on the label. A sunless tanning pill will generally contain either caretenoid pigments or tyrosine, or they will prove to be nothing more than hyped up multivitamins. Other ingredients vary from pill to pill, and often they are nothing more than nutritional supplements. The pills work by altering the skins pigmentation, though not always in the way one would expect or desire for a tan. Some simply turn the skin orange rather than tan. Others end up with the pigment placed unexpectedly in the body, producing less-than-perfect results.
The caretenoid tanning pill works by depositing pigment in fat layers just under the skin, which colors it. Unfortunately, the amount of these substances that are required to be taken is high enough as to have been deemed unsafe by the FDA.
Tyrosine, another base for sunless tanning pills, is a non-essential amino acid that helps skin cells produce melanin. Theres no need to supplement for it, which means that pills containing tyrosine are not up to their manufacturers claims.
While having a great tan without effort and risk of skin damage can be a wonderful feeling, and while the convenience of a sunless tan can be immense, there are some methods that are just not worth the risks to tanners health. The sunless tanning pill would be one of these methods. Tanners looking for a convenient, safe, sunless tan would do well to look elsewhere for that golden glow.

Oil Painting In Florence Italy December 30th, 2009

Author: David Pruittbr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
Oil painting is the method of painting with pigments that bound with means of drying oil, especially linseed oil in early modern Europe. The oil, such as linseed was simmered with pine resin or even frankincense, these were in oil painting used as varnishes and were esteemed for their splendor and glossiness.

Other oils occasionally used in oil painting include poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils give a variety of properties to the oil paint, such as less staining or different drying times.

Certain differences are also visible in the luster of the paints depending on the oil. Painters often use different types of oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and desired effects. The paints themselves also develop a particular feel depending on the media. These techniques can be contemplated in the oil painting lessons in Florence

Traditionally, painting was performed with paint brushes, but there are other methods, including the palette knife, the rag, and even directly from the paint tube. Oil paint remains wet longer than many other types of artists materials, so a reality in many painters studios is the removal of oil paint from the painting.

This can be done with a rag and some turpentine for a certain time while the paint is still wet, but after a while, the if the layer is hard it must be scraped. Oil paint dries by oxidation, not evaporation, and is usually dry to the touch in one to fifteen days

In the oil painting lessons in Italy, you will learn that the oil paint application is fat over lean which means that each layer of paint must be oilier than the one underneath, to allow proper drying. There are many other painting media that can be used in oil painting, including cold wax, resins, and varnishes.

These additional media can help the painter to adjust the transparency of the paint, the luster of the paint, the density or body of the paint, and the ability of the paint to hold or conceal the brushstroke. These variables are closely related to the expressive capacity of oil paint and can be learned in an oil painting art course.

It is generally dry enough to be varnished in six months to a year. But according to art conservators an oil painting is not totally dry until it is around 70 years old.

Netherlands painters in the 15th century were however the first to make oil the usual painting medium, followed by the rest of Northern Europe and Italy. The recognition of oil spread through Italy from the North, starting in Venice in the late 15th century.

By 1540 the previous technique for painting on panel, tempera had become all but extinct, although Italians kept using fresco for wall paintings, which was harder in Northern weather. But now, Italy reigns alone as the worlds top spot for oil painting course or oil painting lessons./pbr

Freckles – Causes, Symptoms And Treatment December 30th, 2009

Author: Nikhil JAinbr

br
strongDefinition: /strong
Freckles are flat, circular small spots of melanin on human skin in people of fair complexion. The spots develop randomly on the skin, especially after repeated exposure to sunlight. They may vary in color – they may be red, yellow, tan, light-brown, brown, or black. They are usually more often seen in the summer, especially among lighter-skinned people and people with light or red hair. Both men and women get freckles at an equal rate.
There are two basic types of freckles – ephelides and lentigines. Ephelides, are flat red or light-brown spots that typically appear during the sunny months and fade in the winter. Lentigines, are small tan, brown, or black spots which tend to be darker than an ephelis-type freckle and which do not fade in the winter.
Freckles are most commonly found on the face , although they may appear on any skin exposed to the sun . Freckles are rare on infants , and are very common among children aged 5 to 15 years. They are usually less common on adults.
strongCauses of Freckle: Some Common Causes of Freckle are as:- /strong
ul
liExposure of skin to sun is one of the main cause of developing freckles. Freckles will fade when sun exposure is reduced or eliminated. /li
liThe basic cause of freckles are some special cells in the skin that produce a pigment called melanin. If you have melanin in your body, going on accumulating at one place, then it may result in freckles age spots. /li
liFreckles are influenced by genetic factor also. /li
liHormone Abnormalities can cause freckles since estrogen over-stimulates pigment-producing cells, causing them to generate excess color when exposed to sunlight. /li
liFair skin is another main cause for freckle. There is less overall melanin in fair skin to absorb UV light, therefore pigment cells produce melanin at an increased rate. /li
/ul

The effective treatments for freckles are as:-
ol
liBleaching Creams – The use of hydroquinone and kojic acid are one of the beneficial treatment for freckles. They may help in lightning freckles if they are applied consistently over a period of months. /li
liCryosurgery: A light freeze with liquid nitrogen can be used to treat freckles. /li
liChemical Peels: Chemical peels are used to remove age spots, freckles, discoloration, wrinkles and fine lines. They generally help to make the skin smooth and firm and also help in curing freckles gradually. /li
liIntense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL): IPL is one of the newer forms of facial rejuvenation. IPL delivers energy to both the superficial (epidermis) and deep (dermis) layers of the skin, the epidermis is spared from damage. Thus, there is virtually no recovery time. /li
liTretinoin: Tretinoin (vitamin A acid, Retin-A) also helps to make freckles lighter when applied over a period of time. /li
liLaser Treatment: Freckle removal is easily achieved with lasers. The laser light is very effective and helps in eliminating freckles safely. /li
