Foods That Stain Your Teeth

There’s no doubt that having white teeth is very important to most people today, and having stained or discolored teeth can be very detrimental to your self confidence, and in the way others perceive you. In one survey, 95 percent of candidates said they found people with stained or yellow teeth significantly less attractive than those with white teeth.

So in order to keep those choppers sparkling, we’d like to present a list of some of the most notorious foods and drinks that will discolour or stain your teeth. Remember, you don’t have to stop your intake of these foods and drinks all together, just limit your consumption, and if you do partake, try brushing afterwards, or at least chew some sugar free gum.

Coffee

Bad news for the caffeine cowboys out there, coffee holds the number one spot for foods that stain your teeth. If you absolutely can’t cut back on your morning pick-me-up, try drinking through a straw, or dilute your coffee with milk or cream, and brush or chew gum after each cup.

Tea

Black tea, like its cousin black coffee, is a terrible teeth stainer, no doubt responsible for the ‘British Smile’, since the English drink about 300 cups a day! The good news about tea is, most other blends, such as green, white and herbal types are actually good for the teeth. So if you want to avoid staining your teeth with tea, simply switch your blend over to one of the more teeth friendly blends.

Soy Sauce

While it’s absolutely delicious and a staple of Asian food, soy sauce will stain your teeth like nobody’s business. This is because pigments in the sauce are very strong, and the sauce will stick to the teeth allowing the staining pigments to leech deep into the enamel of the teeth.

Curry

This one really pains me, as one of my favourite world cuisines is Indian. Unfortunately for me and all the other curry lovers, the blend of herbs and spices that make up this delicious spicy treat (and give it that those strong colors) are very likely to stain your teeth (anyone who’s made curry from scratch at home knows how strong these ingredients can stain, the tumeric stain on my kitchen bench is testament to this!). Just make sure you brush thoroughly after eating curry, and another step to take is take a side order of spinach with your curry, it’s a natural combatant against teeth stains and lots of curry places will offer it as a side dish
