Sunless tanning, like the name suggests, is getting a tan without sun exposure, and still produces an effect similar in appearance to a traditional suntan. This method of tanning does not involve skin pigmentation or UV exposure, which is often dangerous, to set off the change in skin color. Sunless tanning is also often non-toxic and thus, is quite safe. However, tan is temporary and will wear out or fade away within a couple of days.

Sunless tanning products affect the Stratum Corneum, the surface layer of the skin or the outermost layer of the epidermis, while the Stratum Basale, the deepest layer, is affected by tanning under the sun. There is a wide variety of sunless tanning products available on the market today, such as tanning pills, sunless or self-tanners and bronzers, available in the form of gels, lotions, mousses, sprays and wipes. They can be applied at home in private, or professionally in spas, salons, and other health centers.

Many sunless tanning and cosmetic product manufacturers use an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis, as an active ingredient. This is because a change in skin color occurs when dihydroxyacetone creates a reaction with amino acids in the dead layer of the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that sunless tanning products that contain DHA are the most effective in creating a long-lasting tan.

Erythrulose, a natural based keto-sugar which reacts with the amino acids in the keratin protein on the outer or dead surface layer of the skin, is also often combined with DHA to create a longer lasting sunless tan. However, Erythrulose, like DHA, may cause contact dermatitis, a skin irritation characterized by red, flaky skin, sometimes with cracks or tiny blisters.

Other types of sunless tanning products such as tanning creams, lotions or pills usually contain the amino acid – Tyrosine. It is believed that Tyrosine aids in the stimulation and regeneration of melanin (Melanin is a pigment and the primary determinant of color in human skin). This, if true, greatly affects and accelerates the tanning process so thats why many sunless tanning products are called tanning accelerators.

Tanning pills also belong to the category of sunless tanning products, and often contain the chemical – Canthaxanthin. The chemical works by depositing and spreading itself all over the body, including in the skin after its consumed, taking on an orange-brown color. Canthaxanthin is basically a coloring agent used in foods so the FDA does not approve its use a tanning agent. However, many cosmetic companies continue to use it in large quantities as an active agent in tanning products. It has also been established that continual use of canthaxanthin can cause hepatitis and canthaxanthin retinopathy.

One of the recent additions to sunless tanning remedies is Melanotan, a melanocyte (cells located in the bottom layer of the skins epidermis) – stimulating hormone. Melanotan works by inducing skin pigment. Although extensively tested in countries like Australia, it has to be yet approved for clinical trials in the USA.br
In todays world human life is full of stress and anxiety. There is a seemingly endless struggle to succeed and due to which we most often become oblivious to our health, appearance etc. While on the one hand we ourselves are reckless in maintenance of our body, on the other hand our environment is getting all the more deteriorated day by day. These primary factors have lead to several skin or derm disorders among individuals.

This article will be making its readers acquainted with some of the common and harmful skin disorders along with the manner in which they are caused and can be effectively cured.

1. Eczema- a very general skin disease that leads to skin irritation, dryness, itching and even cracking of skin with bleeding. Eczema is known to be of four types. These are – Atopic Eczema (can result in scratching of skin and skin infection), Allergic Contact Dermatitis (leads to skin irritation), Irritant Contact Dermatitis (dry and irritant skin esp. hands) and Infantile Seborrhoeic Eczema.

Cause- an individual can be affected by Eczema due to different reasons like heredity, environment, age etc.

? The Atopic Eczema is more of heredity transfer.

? Allergic Contact Dermatitis is due to things like cologne, jewelry and other ornaments.

? Irritant Contact Dermatitis is caused by contact with chemicals that harm the skin like poor quality detergents etc.

? Infantile Seborrhoeic Eczema- appears on the scalp of infants.

Cures-

? Infantile Seborrhoeic Eczema is fully curable within a few months with creams and oils.

? Irritant Contact Dermatitis should be treated with moisturizers to avert dryness of skin.

? Allergic Contact Dermatitis can be treated by keeping away from the elements that cause it.

? Atopic Eczema needs steroids and emollients for its cure.

2. Vitiligo- a disease of skin pigmentation leading to appearance of white spots on body.

? Causes- Accurate causes of the disease that inflicts most of the Americans are not known yet. However, the studies hold heredity and weak immune system to be the causes behind it. High concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide in the environment and the deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals are even estimated to be the reasons for the disease.

? Effects of Vitiligo- the disease does not lead to any discomforts like headache, pain etc. but it hits different areas of body of different individuals. It starts from less and expands gradually. Vitiligo like skin Eczema is mot contagious.

? The disease can be treated in several ways like pseudocatalase cream, pigment transplantation and skin grafting.

3. Psoriasis- is again a very usual skin disease particularly in United States of America. The symptoms of Psoriasis are appearance of lesions with white scales on them on the skin, weakening of skin and joints.

? Causes – heredity or genetic reasons are attributed as reasons of the disease. Due to it the defective immune system the skin cells mature within a relatively much lesser span of time than usual. The skin cells in this case grow within three to four days contrary to their normal duration of 39 days. These cells form lesions on the skin and do not fall off.

? Treatment- Topical treatments are preferred in case of Psoriasis though the disease is more or less incurable.

Besides these three derm disorders there are few others which are not mentioned here. However, the only precautionary measure to skin diseases is to maintain healthy eating habits and hygiene and also be a little more careful towards your skin.br
Skin tattoos have been present for the longest time now and are more famous today than they were back then. This for of art has been around for more than a thousand year already. Anyone can see them just everywhere. Certain studies presented that approximately 35 percent of the American population aging between 18 to 30 years old have tattoos. People get a tattoo or tattoos for different reasons. For the most part, tattoo represents a statement of ones individuality and self-expression. Majority of the adults feel a lot sexier with a tattoo at some part of their body.

A tattoo, or otherwise known as dermal pigmentation, is a permanent mark, pattern, or design created by inserting pigments into the second layer of the skin. It is done by pricking the skin with specially designed needles dipped into indelible ink. Tattoos on human are some form of artistic body modification, while tattoos found on animals are used for branding or identification.

Tattooing is practiced worldwide. Japans indigenous people called the Ainu have been wearing facial tattoos. Polynesians, and particular tribal groups in Borneo, North America, Philippines, Africa, Mesoamerica, South America, Cambodia, Europe, China, and Japan are into tattoos. Albeit some taboos surrounding the creative world of tattooing, the art still manage to be popular and in demand all throughout the world.

The human skin is constituted of three layers namely: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissues. The epidermis is the topmost layer with no blood vessels and serves as a protective barrier. Second to the epidermis is the dermis. This is a thick layer and this is where the tattoos are formed. Since the epidermis is constantly replenished, with the top skin continually shedding off in a lifetime, the tattoo is pushed deeper into the dermis where it is expected to stay undeterred the whole time.

Tattoo needles penetrate into the skin for about 1.5 millimeters or 1/16 of an inch deeper. The tattoo artist must ensure that the ink goes just enough to be permanent and not deeper than necessary. The depth differs in certain areas of the body, like it is thinner on places like the genitals and deeper on the feets soles.

If a tattoo is too deeply made reaching the subcutaneous tissues, it causes bleeding and pain. It will also appear blurry even after it has healed. And if just a few millimeters beneath the epidermis, it leaves scratches and just wear off.

Learning about tattooing may take several years to master if you really intend of becoming a tattoo artist. Therefore, it is vital that you carefully choose a tattoo artist with more experience and already with a great portfolio of his or her works that clearly show excellent quality. There are aspiring wannabes in this field, so be very cautious. Take note that no matter how attractive the design is, but the tattoo artists skill is not as appealing, the outcome may possibly be devastation. A tattoo is as pretty and captivating as the artist who did it./pbr
br
Spirulina is microscopic micro algae which grows in fresh water. They have existed for billions of years and are arguably natures most nutritious and complete food. They are believed to contain the whole range of nutrients which are required by people for the maintenance of health. Spirulina contains twelve times the amount of digestible protein as beef, with a much better balance of minerals than beef. There have been reports of people living off nothing but spirulina.

Spirulina contains complete protein, all of the B vitamins, including Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, a range of minerals, including trace minerals, beta-carotene, chlorophyll, and the omega 3 fatty acids, and a range of other nutrients, and is a very digestible food. Blue-green algae are so named because of the blue colour of the pigment, phycocyanin, and the green colour of chlorophyll. The intensity of these pigments hides the fact that other pigments in the form of carotenoids are present. These are red, orange and yellow and are said to be responsible for the fact that flamingos in East Africa are pink in colour, because they feed off naturally growing spirulina in lakes in Kenya. The main pigment of these carotenoids is beta-carotene, the ingestion of which enables people to produce vitamin A as the body requires.

Spirulina has been used by some people as an aid to weight loss. It has been found that many people experience a reduction in appetite if they take a few grams of spirulina thirty to sixty minutes before a meal. This probably stands to reason because of the highly nutritious nature of the food and the fact that the body realises that it does not require such an immediate intake of nutrients after all.

An unusual feature of blue-green algae is the fact that their cell walls are digestible, which enables the nutrients to be spread throughout the organism, as opposed to other plants which usually have their nutrients confined within a membrane making digestion more difficult. Anyone who is sick and living on a restricted diet can benefit from the consumption of spirulina, because they will be consuming a wide range of nutrients which they may otherwise not be receiving. Large quantities are not required to receive such benefits because of the fact that spirulina is so nutrient rich. Spirulina is also a useful aid to detoxification.

Spirulina is an excellent supplement for pregnant and lactating mothers, providing them with extra iron and protein without imposing fat and carbohydrates. Children who are fussy eaters would greatly benefit from it as well, and it is said that hyperactive children benefit from a calming effect. As a plant source of vitamin B12, spirulina is an excellent food for vegetarians, who also benefit from the quality protein available, which they would not be getting in the form of animal products. Blue-green algae, if taken before exercise, give an energy boost because of the concentration of protein and other nutrients.

Japanese experiments have shown that the use of blue-green algae has significant benefits for those suffering from anaemia, possibly because of the conversion of chlorophyll into haemoglobin. Chorophyll is an excellent purifier of the blood and is absorbed directly through the cell membranes of the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. Blue-green algae contain thousands of enzymes which in concert with co-enzymes and vitamins and minerals enable the body to perform the functions that are required to survive.

Blue-green algae have the potential to alleviate much of the worlds problem of starvation. When you consider the fact that soy beans produce, acre for acre, ten times the amount of protein that beef cattle do, and that blue-green algae produce twenty times as much protein, acre for acre, as soy beans do, then you are drawn to the inescapable conclusion that blue-green algae offer tremendous opportunities for overcoming food shortages in third world countries.

In conclusion, the opportunities offered by the utilization of blue-green algae both in terms of our individual health, and in terms of the overall health of emerging nations, can no longer be ignored.

br
The Polycystioc Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder affecting between thousands of women worldwide. Since some women are asymptomatic, it is particularly hard for them to detect the condition. Only when it becomes problematic, such in cases of disability to conceive women turn to their doctors to ask for their expert advice and seek treatment. On the other hand, some women have quite pronounced symptoms, including obesity, acne and/or skin pigmentation, hirsutism, male-pattern hair growth or baldness, weight gain and insulin resistance. In addition, records of high blood pressure have also occurred, as well as dizziness, exhaustion and depression. Extremely important are also the psychosocial effects of PCOS, as suffering women tend to have poor body image and low self-esteem.

While PCOS is not a rare health case, the causes of PCOS are unclear. Recent studies indicate both genetic and environmental/lifestyle links. Specifically, doctors attest that about 25 percent of women have ovaries that can be diagnosed as polycystic on an ultrasound examination. This condition is called Polycystic Ovaries (PCO) and it can occur for a number of reasons. But women with polycystic ovaries (PCO) do not necessarily suffer from PCOS. Those having the syndrome have cysts that actually contain small follicles, which have not matured to release an egg.

In countries were special examinations exist, doctors are able to diagnose PCOS when other typical PCOS symptoms are present, but the ovaries appear to be normal. Most frequently, women with PCOS will have more than one of the following symptoms: irregular or only occasional periods, which may be very heavy when they occur; polycystic ovaries; difficulty becoming pregnant; problems with weight gain and increased upper body fat; excessive facial hair growth or occasional loss of head hair; acne or skin pigmentation; and increased blood lipids. As any one of these symptoms can be caused by other health conditions, it is important for women to investigate all the possibilities with their doctor before taking any form of medication.

Unfortunately, although research and knowledge is evolving rapidly, PCOS is not yet fully understood by practitioners. In particular, while doctors know that certain hormones are affected, they do not known where and how the changes begin or why some women will have different symptoms compared to others. In most cases, the hormones typically affected by PCOS are androgens-male-type hormones, such as testosterone-which are present in low levels in all women. But the women having PCOS have higher levels of androgens causing a variety of health problems like the ones mentioned above. Moreover, the hormone of insulin can be also affected. This is extremely serious, as women with PCOS may become insulin resistant, which can lead to weight gain and an increased risk of forming diabetes later in their life. Also, other hormones affected include the luteinising hormone (LH) and the follicular stimulating hormone (FSH). The outcome is that the follicles in the ovary do not mature and thus prevent the ovary from releasing an egg that will lead to a normal monthly cycle.

Oral contraceptives are usually subscribed by doctors since the chemical substances they release can be used to assist with irregular periods and will help protect women with PCOS against uterine cancer. But before taking any type of oral contraceptives, women found to have PCOS must consult with their doctor about the best form medicine for their specific case.

Finally, women with or without PCOS should focus on creating and maintaining a lifestyle that will keep them fit and healthy. Frequent diet changes and weight increase or loss due to irregular eating patterns, should be definitely avoided. Furthermore, exercising should be one of the first priorities women with PCOS should have, as regular exercise can help reduce the insulin levels in the blood and encourage weight loss. However, some women with PCOS will find it very difficult to manage their weight. But, even in cases where weight loss is not necessary, symptoms are improved via a healthier diet and an exercise plan.br

The One That Got Away?

Are you letting the best health foods escape you? Did you know that there is more vitamin C in white part of the skin of oranges than in the rest of the orange?

Whole Fresh Fruits – the valuable pectin fibre is found in the skin and pulp. Figs, prunes and raspberries have the highest fibre content.

Apples

Almost half of the vitamin C content is just underneath the skin. Eating the skin also increases insoluble fiber content.

In the past, apple skins were discarded in food products such as juices because the flavanoids in the skin caused cloudiness in the juice. Now it is known that the flavanoids are powerful cancer fighters and support the heart and liver.

Blueberries

The blue in blueberries comes from the anthocyanin pigment. In the North American blueberry, the pigment is only found in the skin. Unripe berries with a thick skin contain the highest concentrations of pectin.

Kiwi fruit rival bananas in potassium, pound for pound. And flavonoid antioxidants abound in the skin, which is edible but best if you rub the fuzzy stuff off first.

Carrot

Don’t peel them if you want to maintain their spectacular color; and many nutritionists claim much nutrition is contained in the skin.

Fruit And Vegetable Juices

Although much of the calcium in the orange is lost during juicing, you can buy calcium-fortifed orange juice. OJ is also rich in phytonutrients. Depending upon how much pulp they leave in, it can even contain some fiber. In other words they are charging you to take out the nutrients then charging you to put the back in and call it fortified.

Grapes

Resveratrol is synthesized by plants in response to stress like lack of nutrients and fungal infection. It exists in the skin of both red and white grapes.

Lemons

The yellow part of the skin (zest) of lemons has most of the limonoids in the fruit. Recent research has shown that limonoids were equally potent as tamoxifen for inhibiting the proliferation of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells,.

Nectarines

Much of the fiber in fruit is in the skin of nectarines. To get the full benefit of fiber, wash the fruit well and then eat the whole fruit – with the skin.

Oranges

Healthy phytochemicals include terpenoids found in the skin of citrus fruits, and
limonoids in the outer skin (zest) of lemons and oranges (inhibit tumor growth).

Peach

Today’s peaches need not be peeled, especially when served fresh for fruit plates and salads. This is because most peaches are de-fuzzed by machinery soon after picking. Leaving the skin means less work for the cook and is a smart choice from a nutritional point of view. Much of the full, deep flavor and nutrients in peaches are found in the skin.

Pears

Nutritional Rich Source of Fair content of vitamin C (mostly in the skin)

Plums

Plums have only moderate amounts of soluble gums and pectins in the flesh, as well as small amounts of cellulose and the non-carbohydrate food fiber lignin in the skin.

Potatoes

The greatest concentration of antioxidants in the potato was in the skin, Howard noted. Preliminary studies by Miller and Howard point to patatin, the major water-soluble protein in potatoes, as being the possible source of the antioxidant activity.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain significant amounts a number of different antioxidants, including: lycopene (a carotenoid), phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). As these antioxidants are found mostly in the skin it is important to eat the skin as well as the flesh of the skin.

Rice

Brown rice takes longer to cook than polished white rice, but most of the goodness is in the brown stuff that is removed to make white rice.

Wheat

There are 3 parts to the wheat grain. Starch, germ, and bran. The food processors remove the last two and sell them back to you as bran and wheat germ, because these are the only good parts of wheat. Starch just makes you fat.

Taste of Skins

Some of these skins have a strong flavour which you may find unpleasant. Dried fruit are excellent flavouring devices. Peanut paste is another, which can hide even the taste of medicine, but make sure that you are not allergic to it.

Warning

Non-organically grown apples and soft fruits are heavily sprayed. If organic alternatives are not available you are better off peeling them even though vital nutrients in the skin will be lost. If grapes are your preferred choice, search for a dedicated partner who is willing to peel them for you!

Apple cores concentrate agricultural poisons so don’t use them if not organically (without agricultural chemicals) grown.

If you can’t buy organic produce you can buy special surfactants intended for washing your fruit and vegetables. Most of the chemicals don’t wash off in plain hot water.

This, if true, greatly affects and accelerates the tanning process so that’s why many sunless tanning products are called tanning accelerators.

Tanning pills also belong to the category of sunless tanning products, and often contain the chemical – Canthaxanthin. The chemical works by depositing and spreading itself all over the body, including in the skin after it’s consumed, taking on an orange-brown color.

One of the recent additions to sunless tanning remedies is Melanotan, a melanocyte (cells located in the bottom layer of the skin’s epidermis) – stimulating hormone. Melanotan works by inducing skin pigment. Although extensively tested in countries like Australia, it has to be yet approved for clinical trials in the USA.
