Sunless Tanning December 31st, 2009

Sunless tanning is becoming very popular, there are two main reasons for this. Firstly having a good tan has become fashionable and desirable. A lot of people do not live in a place with constant sunshine and most of us cannot afford a holiday to the sun to top up our tans every month. This means that people are turning to the various methods of sunless tanning to achieve the desired result. The second reason is to do with health. It is common knowledge that regular exposure to the sun increases the risk of contracting skin cancer. Also the sun has an aging effect on skin, regular sun bathing can leave you looking older than you actually are. Sunless tanning can offer a safe way to get that bronzed look you were after without damaging your skin.
There are 4 main sunless tanning methods you can use:
1.Sunless Tanning Lotion – Sunless tanning lotions generally contain the bronzing ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This is a colourless sugar that interacts with dead skin cells causing a colour change to occur. The colour change usually lasts about 5 to 7 days from the initial application. This is a popular method of sunless tanning but it can be difficult to get an even tan.
2.Spray Tanning – The science of spray tanning is similar to tanning lotions, but the tanning solution is applied in a spray. This can either be done manually by a spray gun or automatically in a tanning booth. A new development in spray tanning is the colourless tanning solution. This solution does not contain bronzer and affords a less streaky, more even tan.
3.Tanning Beds – Tanning beds or sunbeds contain fluorescent tubes, these tubes tan the skin by emitting Ultraviolet (UV) Rays, the same type of radiation that is found in natural sunlight. These tanning beds are an effective sunless tanning method but frequent, long term usage can lead to skin cancer and skin aging.
4.Tanning Pills – Tanning pills come in three varieties: Those that contain caretenoid pigments, those that contain tyrosine and those with no active ingredients. Caretenoid pills contain a pigment which, when taken internally saturates the fat layers just below the skin, which appears to give the skin colour. These pills can change the colour of your skin but the results are often undesirable. The colouration can look unnatural and tends to be concentrated in fatty areas leaving an uneven effect. The other 2 types of tanning pill are not proven to have any effect on the colour of your skin.
Generally the best method of sunless tanning is the spray tan, or if you can not get to a tanning salon you can use a tanning lotion. There are a wide variety of sunless tanning products available so some experimentation may be necessary to find one which you are comfortable using and which works with your skin type. Tanning beds are effective but they have similar risks to conventional sunbathing. Tanning pills are best avoided unless you know exactly what they contain and what the effect will be on your skin.

Beware Of Tanning Pills: Tanning Pills Are Not Approved By Fda! December 17th, 2009

The sales guy or the advertisement promoting the tanning pills will make you spell bound telling the benefits of Tanning Pills. The craze for a tanned skin is an opportunity for the manufacturers to earn millions by making fools all around. Never try tanning pills blindly! You may lose your eye sight and turn like a turtle in color.

Tanning pills have caught the attention with the propaganda that sun tanning is harmful and tanning inside the tanners too cause skin cancer. If sun would have been so harmful, why do people like farmers or others dont suffer from cancer working day long in under the sun? There are several side effects of the tanning pills, otherwise why FDA have not approved it. Tanning pills contain such elements that can harm you to that extent that you can not dream of.

Tanning pills come in three forms: some contain caretenoid pigments, some may contain tyrosine and the others contain nothing. The fact is that melanin does not get generated by any of these organic compounds. Melanin is only developed either by genes or by the UV rays of the sun. If you have tried taking these pills, I urge you to stop them. They have adverse side effects and you will have faced troubles later on.

A. Side effects of tanning pills containing caretenoid: Caretenoid is an orange pigment which plays no role in melanin formation. Instead they provide a pale, yellowish irregular color to your skin and you look so awkward. This happens due to the deposition of the caretenoid molecules on the fat layer under your skin. Sometimes it may be orange too. So you will get an unique orange tan! The accumulation of the pigments in the retina harm your eyes and excessive deposition will lead to blindness. Mostly the pills contain canthaxanthin or lycopene as caretenoid color pigments and these are not friendly to your body.

B. Side effects of tanning pills containing tyrosine: Tyrosine is an amino acid and the tanning pills claim that they help in melanin production. This is a rubbish assertion. Excessive tyrosine may be toxic to the central nervous system and may damage the brain too.

C. Side effects of tanning pills containing neither of the above mentioned chemicals: These pills mostly cause allergic side effects. Your skin may develop unwanted acne and may be quite embarrassing.

Tanning pills are the worst sunless tanning products. The pills act like slow poison that harms you in manner you cannot track and suddenly the symptoms arise and it becomes very cumbersome to treat it at all. Avoid using tanning pills before its too late.br

Tanning Bed Facts November 14th, 2009

A tanning bed produces UV rays and thus just like the sun there can be some health issues. You can tan safely by following the tanning bed tips provided by many. Here are some tanning bed facts.
Skin type

No matter what type of tanning bed you are using, if you don’t know your skin type you could land up in trouble. There are five basic skin types. The lightest being albino the darkest being naturally dark pigmented skin such as Asian or African. And then there is the rest of us somewhere in between.
The type of skin you have will determine how long and how often you can tan. Some skin types burn much quicker, while others seldom burn at all. The salon attendant will help you determine your skin type. If you are tanning at home then refer to the manual that came with your tanning bed.
Tanning Lotions

Always use a tanning lotion that id designed for indoor tanning. Stay away from the oils. They are messy and they get all over the acrylic which then blocks the rays from reaching you.
Use a tanning lotion appropriate for your skin. So if you burn easily the choose a lotion with a higher SPF. Never use inside lotions outside or outside lotions inside. Each is designed to protect you from specific rays associated with that type of tanning.
Do Not Let Yourself Burn

Avoid a sun burn at all costs. In the tanning world this is the golden rule. Some people will burn much easier than others and you need to take steps to avoid burning. If you are really fair and you never tan without first getting a burn, then don’t tan. It’s that simple. Burns are dangerous to your health and the cause of skin cancer. No tan is worth risking skin cancer. Tan smart!
Choose Your Bed Carefully

You should always start with a lower watt tanning bulb bed. The beginner beds aren’t as powerful as the mega beds and it will give you pigment time to develop. Once you’ve got your base tan you can move to a bed that has stronger tanning bulbs. If you stop tanning and you loose your tan then you have to start all over again from the beginning with a low watt bed. The strong tanning bulb beds are very powerful and you will damage your skin if your skin is not ready for them.
Home Tanning Beds

You might want to consider purchasing your own bed. Although the commercial beds are great you have to work your schedule around their schedule and it seems you’re always rushed. With a bed at home you can relax and enjoy your tan and you can tan in the privacy of your own home. It’s a great end to a busy day.
Home tanning beds can be purchased for a reasonable price, especially if you calculate how much it cost to go to a commercial bed. Remember there is not just the cost of session but the gas to get there, the wear and tear on your car, and the cost of your time. It’s something to consider.
Of course there are advantages to commercial tanning beds to. They always have the latest and greatest beds. They absorb the cost of replacing bulbs that have become weak, and they do all the maintenance and repair. All you have to do is show up.
However you decide to get your indoor tan, just be smart and tan in moderation. You can have that beautiful golden tan if you play your tanning bulbs right!
